Pushing boundaries: Moving From Climate Neutral to Net Zero

While many companies talk about being “climate neutral” by compensating their emissions somewhere else, we’re taking it a step further. For us, hitting Net-Zero means changing how we actually run Swapfiets from the ground up, and not just buying carbon credits or balancing the books at the end of the year. We make sure we drop our emissions to the absolute minimum at every single stage, from the factories that make our parts to the vans delivering our bikes. This year, we have completed our decarbonisation roadmap which will allow us to reduce our carbon emissions by 90% in 2050.

Circularity in Motion: Concrete Progress and Smarter Logistics

Many companies talk about circularity, but our Product-as-a-Service (PaaS) model makes it a reality. Traditional companies make money by selling you a bike and walking away. At Swapfiets, we flip that incentive. Because we retain total ownership of our bikes, a broken component is a direct cost to us. We are therefore incentivised to engineer parts that last longer and prioritise local repair over replacement.  This exact loop is why we cut our overall carbon emissions by 36% last year. Keeping existing bikes on the road meant we didn’t have to continuously manufacture and transport new ones, which release massive amounts of CO2.

To keep this circular machine running without guesswork, we backed our operations with hard data and smart logistics:

  • Advanced Carbon Tracking (Sweep): We transitioned to Sweep, a world-class climate management tool that monitors our exact greenhouse gas footprint with precision across our supply chain.

  • Verified Partners & Code of Conduct: Sustainability must run through our entire supply chain. We updated our Business Partner Code of Conduct to set a strict baseline for ethical labor and environmental care , and onboarded 99% of our bike and parts suppliers onto Verso, an audit platform providing total supply chain transparency.

  • Digital Material Passports (Item Cards): To run a closed loop, you must know what your bikes are made of. We extended our internal Item Cards to serve as digital passports for components, tracking data down to the gram, including exact material composition (% recycled content vs. virgin materials), weight, and energy sources used during manufacturing.

A business that cares beyond hardware

A truly sustainable company starts with a sustainable mindset, and that includes taking care of our communities. This year, we took our social and inclusion goals straight to the streets:

  • Free cycling courses: In Bremen, we launched a project alongside local partners to provide free cycling courses, specifically helping build the confidence of women who have never cycled before.

  • Festival Bike Buddies: In Amsterdam, we partnered with the DGTL festival to launch “Bike Buddies”. Our crew rode alongside festival-goers, especially with women and gender minorities, between midnight and 7 AM to make sure everyone made it to the ferry safely.

It’s not just us, it’s you as well!

We provide the wheels, but you provide the power. We want to say a massive thank you to our members. By choosing a Swapfiets, you are already driving the circular movement.

Many of you are even greener than we initially realised! Our latest member surveys showed that most of our e-bike riders are actively charging their batteries using green energy at home. These conscious choices, combined with our circular model, are what truly drive change. Together, we’re making urban life cleaner, quieter, and more liveable by the day.
