Both e-bike leasing and using an e-bike on a subscription basis give you options to pay less each month than paying the full price of a brand new e-bike. Both options will also help you with maintenance and repair costs.
But the main difference is flexibility. Leasing has a typical contract length of 3 to 5 years and includes a BKR registration. A bike subscription allows you to cancel or change your plans after just one year or as little as 1 to 6 months.
For most riders, a bike subscription gives you the greatest flexibility. So, if you have found that you know you will be riding the same e-bike for 3 to 5 years, you will likely find the lease option to be the least expensive way to go.

What is Swapfiets?
Swapfiets is a bike membership. That means for a low, fixed monthly fee, you get a Swapfiets and we make sure it always works. Problem along the way? Hit us up via our app and we’ll fix or swap it for a new one.
Is bike leasing cheaper than a bike subscription?
Leasing isn't always cheaper. While lease contracts often have lower monthly payments, they typically involve more expensive bikes and much longer commitments. Bike subscriptions generally cost more per month but offer greater flexibility and shorter contracts.
Is there a BKR registration with bike leasing?
Usually, yes. Private leases of bicycles in The Netherlands are almost always reported to the BKR. However, regulations among lenders may be different, so it is important to read through your lender’s policy documents before entering into an agreement.
Do I own the bike after leasing?
Usually not.You do not own the bike during the duration of the lease contract. The company providing the leasing contract retains ownership of the vehicle. Some companies allow for purchase of the bike by the lessee at the conclusion of the leasing contract, but such a provision does not automatically exist with all leasing contracts.
What happens when I'm done with my membership?
To cancel your membership simply follow the instructions and steps in the Swapfiets app. All of our memberships include a one-month notice period. If you’re on a loyal membership, you can cancel after 6 months. Once you bring back the bike we'll give it a quick tune-up and send it on its way to serve another member.
